Since 2003 our school-site residencies in the Portland area have provided children with opportunities for artistic exploration, environmental learning & literacy growth. Residencies are collaboratively planned with classroom teachers and integrated into core curriculum.
Geared to grade-level-learning, projects range from species puppets and masks to content-rich graphic novels or plays about cultural history, like that of the Columbia River region. As a multi-arts program we integrate music, visual and theater arts in our residencies. They support the heart of our work – Story Making.
We guide children through the process of creating collaborative stories that also engage them as creative writers, enactors and designers. Some of the stories are funny, with universal lessons. Others are more personal, exploring a character’s unique challenges and gifts. And many of these stories express children’s dreams – great or small – for better lives and a better world.
Earth Arts Kids know through experience that unexpected, innovative solutions emerge through collaboration and that each one of us can make a meaningful contribution in shaping good ideas and bringing them into form.
Today’s children are youthful stewards of 21st century Earth. Many are already aware of the challenges ahead. From restoration of eco-systems to the development of sustainable communities, they’ll need to imagine and create new pathways to follow into the future. We nurture their capacity to solve problems through artful, effective change and to deepen their reliance on one another.
